The British School of Barcelona (BSB) has officially inaugurated BSB Maresme, its fourth campus in Catalonia, located in Cabrera de Mar. The event was attended by Òscar Fernández, Mayor of Cabrera de Mar, representatives from the Cabrera de Mar Town Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Barcelona, and the British Consulate General in Barcelona, alongside Cognita executives, members of the educational community, and organisations from the region’s business and educational sectors.

The school has begun its first academic year with more than 120 Early Years and Primary pupils, marking the start of an educational project that will grow progressively over the coming years. From September 2027, BSB Maresme will introduce Secondary education, gradually expanding its educational provision until it becomes an all-through school for students aged 3 to 18.

With the opening of BSB Maresme, The British School of Barcelona strengthens its presence in Catalonia, adding its fourth campus to those already operating in Barcelona, Castelldefels, and Sitges. This expansion consolidates BSB’s commitment to bringing its international education model to new areas of the region and, particularly, to families in the Maresme area.

A new step in the journey of BSB and Cognita

BSB Maresme has been developed with the support of Cognita, a global schools group that operates in 20 countries across the world to which The British School of Barcelona belongs. The campus covers an area of 16,500 m² and will accommodate approximately 700 students. Its launch also marks another milestone in the relationship between BSB and Cognita, which began in 2007 when The British School of Barcelona became the first international school to join the group.

As a Cognita school, BSB benefits from shared educational expertise, resources and connections across schools worldwide, while retaining the local identity, leadership and educational approach that makes it distinctive. By standing behind its schools and the people who work within them, Cognita helps create the conditions for teachers and school leaders to focus on what matters most, helping children learn, grow and thrive.

David Baldwin Group CEO of Cognita, highlighted during the inauguration the significance of this new project within the shared journey of both organisations: “The British School of Barcelona holds a special place in Cognita’s story. It was the first international school to join our group nearly 20 years ago, and it’s wonderful to see how far it has come. What makes a school special isn’t simply its buildings or facilities, but the extraordinary people who bring it to life every day. With BSB Maresme, we’re creating more opportunities for those people to do what they do best, and for more children to benefit from an exceptional education.”

The opening comes at a time of growth for British education in Spain. Over the last five years, the number of British schools has increased by 7% and their student numbers by 16%, reflecting the growing interest in an education with an international perspective.

Spaces designed for learning, growing, and living together

The design of BSB Maresme is based on the idea that the educational environment also plays a role in the learning and wellbeing of pupils. The facilities incorporate sustainable materials, 80 solar panels, and advanced energy efficiency and comfort solutions. These spaces have been conceived to adapt to the different educational stages and support the academic and personal development of the students.

The project maintains the pillars that define the BSB educational model: academic excellence, wellbeing, innovation, and personal development. Academic learning is complemented by the development of skills such as critical thinking, communication, independence, and readiness to thrive in an international environment. Neil Tetley, Director Ejecutivo de The British School of Barcelona, noted that “Wonderful facilities matter, and we are lucky to have them with this amazing new campus, but the heart of any great school is its people. The team we have at BSB is what truly sets us apart, and I have no doubt they will make BSB Maresme something very special for our students.”

A campus connected to its surroundings

BSB Maresme was also created with the intention of integrating into the Cabrera de Mar community and establishing links with local institutions, organisations, and the region’s social, business, and educational networks.

In this regard, Òscar Fernández, Mayor of Cabrera de Mar, welcomed the school and highlighted its contribution to the municipality: “Today, Cabrera de Mar is forging new links with Great Britain through this British school, which enables us to share experiences and strengthen collaboration between the local council and the educational community. It is an honour for us to have institutions that promote the social, educational and economic development of our region. Now more than ever, it is important to develop projects such as this, which help to build a future of collective hope.”

The launch of the campus has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of various institutions, teams, and specialised companies, including Urcotex and PlayOffice, along with other professionals and organisations involved in the project’s development. During the opening day, authorities and guests toured the facilities and learned first-hand about the educational project in an event that included institutional speeches and the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony.

With this inauguration, BSB begins a new chapter in Cabrera de Mar, with its sights set on the progressive growth of the campus and its future expansion to new educational stages.
